Sunderland booked their place in to the third round of the EFL Cup after Aiden O’Brien hit a hat-trick to secure a 3-2 win over Blackpool.
The 27-year-old attacker pulled out a masterclass of a performance as O’Brien managed to scored a 91st-minute winner to complete his hat-trick and to secure the win for Sunderland.
It was an end-to-end contest at Bloomfield Road with Blackpool taking the lead within nine minutes. However, O’Brien was able to restore Sunderland’s lead before hitting his hat-trick in a 3-2 result.
The Black Cats will discover later this week who they will face off in the next round of the League Cup. The likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool will enter the competition.
Indeed, O’Brien will be one of the stars of this round of the competition with his stunning hat-trick against the Championship side. As per Salary Sport, the attacker is one of the club’s highest-paid players at £6.5k-a-week.
The attacker only bagged six goals for Sunderland last season. However, the hat-trick scored by O’Brien tonight will no doubt be a hit with supporters as well as Lee Johnson.

And on social media, fans were buzzing that O’Brien was able to save the day for Sunderland in a competition that could be important for squad development this season.
