Well, there was no magic of the FA Cup evident for Marine in their much-anticipated visit of Tottenham Hotspur this evening, but there certainly was for one of the visiting players.
Spurs put the eighth-tier club to the sword with a ruthless 5-0 victory on Merseyside tonight.
Four first-half goals effectively killed off any chance of a giant killing, with Carlos Vinicius bagging himself a hat-trick before the break.
But really, this game was about Alfie Devine.
Jose Mourinho introduced the teenage summer signing from Wigan at half-time to make him Tottenham’s youngest-ever player in a competitive game, aged 16 years and 163 days.
And the youngster marked the occasion with a goal on the hour mark, jinking past a few players before unleashing a fierce drive which beat the goalkeeper at his near post.
It was a moment for Devine to savour and here’s how Tottenham fans reacted to the goal on Twitter:
Mourinho’s side are potentially in a Premier League title race, sitting four points behind Liverpool with a game in hand.
In other words, there’ll be a lot less room for the Portuguese to experiment with his team selections from here on in – well, in the league that is.
This could be Devine’s last experience of senior action this season but, if it is, he’ll have a taste for the big time now and hopefully it accelerates his development even more.
