Bryan Gil was handed a debut on an otherwise dismal night for Tottenham Hotspur in Europe.
Spurs kicked off their Europa Conference League campaign with a trip to Portugal to face Pacos de Ferreira.
It was a blend of youth and experience in Tottenham’s XI, with Ben Davies, Cristian Romero, Matt Doherty, Harry Winks and Giovani Lo Celso all starting.
But despite some heavy hitters, it was an awful performance by the North Londoners, who slumped to a 1-0 defeat.
Very few of Spurs’ senior stars showed up, but some Lilywhites fans were impressed by Gil’s debut nonetheless.
The Spain international was arguably the only player who looked like creating anything for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
And here’s how some fans reacted to his bow:
First blood
This win is certainly first blood for the Portuguese side.
But this, remember, is a two-legged affair and surely Tottenham will turn it around in North London next Thursday.
Having said that, Nuno still had enough quality on the field to effectively finish the job tonight and yet they failed.
So you wonder whether Jose Mourinho’s successor will break out a few more of the big guns – like, say Son Heung-min – to make certain of their passage in seven days.
