The Sheffield Star claims United are understood to have enquired about the Wednesday striker, in whom they first registered an interest during last summer’s transfer window.
Winnall, who has already left one South Yorkshire club for another within the past year-and-a-half – Barnsley to Sheffield Wednesday, spent all but the first month of last season on loan with Derby County.
And with Fernando Forestieri, Gary Hooper, Steven Fletcher, Atdhe Nuhiu and Lucas Joao for company, the 26-year-old is likely to find himself low down the Owls’ pecking order by the time he recovers from an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury, suffered in February this year.
