The former Sheffield Wednesday favourite is one of several casualties of Aston Villa’s promotion.

Some Sheffield Wednesday fans would welcome a return to Hillsborough for the released Aston Villa midfielder, Glenn Whelan.

Whelan was one of several casualties of Aston Villa’s promotion to the Premier League – despite having played 38 times this past campaign.

The Irishman’s position is one in which Sheffield Wednesday are expected to strengthen in the summer transfer window, while it was the current Owls manager, Steve Bruce, who brought him to Villa Park from Stoke two years ago.

And despite Whelan’s advancing years – he’ll turn 36 during the 2019/20 season – the following Wednesdayites are championing his signing.

Whelan spent three-and-a-half years at Sheffield Wednesday at the start of his career – and helped the Owls to promotion via the League One play-offs in his first season at Hillsborough.

He then spent close to a decade playing Premier League football for Stoke, before his successful stint at Aston Villa.
