Penney has committed to Sheffield Wednesday until 2020.

Sheffield Wednesday have announced that winger Matt Penney has signed a new contract, although some Owls fans are concerned by the length of the deal.
Penney’s previous contract was due to expire at the end of this season, which is said to have alerted a number of clubs.
But Wednesday have moved to avoid losing the youngster on the cheap – if only for another year.
On the one hand, extending Penney’s deal by a year is sensible, especially given Sheffield Wednesday’s current financial predicament. It ensured the Owls are not over-committing to a player who has only played 16 times professionally and suffered a recent dip in form – albeit after impressive performances against Stoke, Aston Villa and Leeds.
On the other – and assuming Penney recovers from his slump – it could leave Wednesday in a similar position a year from now, at which point the 21-year-old may not be as keen to stay put.

Consider too that last season, the club gave Jordan Thorniley, who had made eight fewer Owls appearances (five) than Penney, a three-year extension with only a few months less to run on his contract.
