Southampton have beaten Sheffield Wednesday in the race to dismiss their under-fire manager.

Mark Hughes’ sacking as manager of Southampton has sparked an inevitable discussion among fans of Sheffield Wednesday on Twitter.
Wednesday have lost six of their last eight Championship fixtures, winning just once in that time, and should be preparing a change of their own in the eyes of many of an Owls persuasion.
But 48 hours after Saturday’s 4-2 defeat at Blackburn Rovers – a scoreline which flattered the visitors – Jos Luhukay remains in office.
And Hughes’ exit only seems to have increased calls for the Dutchman’s head.
This is what is being said about Southampton’s decision…
A heavily-decorated ex-player, Hughes has around 14 years’ experience as a Premier League manager, in which time he has held roles at Blackburn, Manchester City, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers, Stoke City and Southampton.
The Welshman has yet to experience relegation, and his only experience outside of the top flight arrived between 2000 and 2002 as a Blackburn player.
Given their ongoing financial problems, Sheffield Wednesday may struggle to attract a manager of Hughes’ reputation – even if they wanted to.
