Megson picked up Sheffield Wednesday in 12th position and took them to third before his sacking a year later.

Some Sheffield Wednesday fans are calling for Gary Megson’s return after their former player and manager left West Bromwich Albion on Wednesday.

Megson prevented Wednesday from falling, for the very first time, into the fourth tier of English football shortly after his appointment six years ago.

And he is seen – I’ll reiterate, by some – as a potential saviour once more, with the Owls falling further from play-off contention under current head coach Carlos Carvalhal.

Carvalhal has led Wednesday to the play-offs in each of his two seasons in charge, but his possession-based brand of football – which has seen his side produce five shots on target throughout the month of November – is wearing thin with many Owls fans.

And based on comments made during the following interview, given by Megson to Sheffield Live TV 18 months ago, the 58-year-old would soon put that right, were he appointed again by the Owls.

He said: “It’s the biggest misnomer in football, that (possession). They put that on the television, the possession stats, but it doesn’t mean anything.

“The stat that matters the most is obviously the score, but the stat is how many shots you’re having at goal, how many you’ve got on target and which way you’re going.

“It used to drive me mad at Bolton, we had an IT department there that was second to none, it was brilliant. I went in, loved it, but changed it to how I wanted it to work.

“One of the things was possession. Every time, we were way down on the opposition’s possession. And so I said to them, change it then, I want to see the possession in the attacking half, because our centre-halves aren’t passing it across the back and back to the goalkeeper, out the left-back, out the right-back, tip-tap-tip – we’re trying to score.

“And then when we did that, it was entirely different. Where the possession is, that’s what makes a difference.”

Would Megson be a good appointment for Sheffield Wednesday?
