Rival fans on Twitter have reacted to Willian’s comments that Mikel Arteta told him that he wants to win the Champions League with Arsenal within three years.
Willian, who made the switch from Stamford Bridge to the Emirates Stadium, stated ‘that’s what I wanted to hear’ when Arteta shared his ambitions to him, as quoted by Sky Sports.
Arsenal will be playing Europa League football next season after missing out on Champions League football once again during the recently-concluded campaign.
Given that the North London club aren’t in club football’s most elite competition, it is understandable as to why some fans have seen the funny side to Willian’s claims.
But there were others who defended Arteta and stated that he is showing ambition, which every club shows at the start of a season.
In a way, it’s a lose-lose situation for Arsenal and Arteta because if they stated that their goal is to just cement a top-four finish then they would have widely been mocked.
Arsenal’s record transfer deals
- Nicolas Pepe
£72 million
- Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
£56 million
- Alexandre Lacazette
£52 million
- Thomas Partey
45 million
- Mesut Ozil
£42 million
Equally, they are receiving the same reaction for wanting to get Arsenal back to the top after years and years of struggle.
Arteta has shown that he can tactically compete with the best after he helped the club lift the FA Cup in what wasn’t even his first proper season in charge.
It’s quite clear that he needs backing, and if that doesn’t happen, then Arsenal will just continue to stagnate and fail to progress, just like they have been doing for a pretty long while.
