Dele Alli to Rangers?

Stranger things have happened, but it’s still highly unlikely. That didn’t stop former Liverpool and Fulham midfielder Danny Murphy floating the idea of a Rangers move for the Tottenham Hotspur star.

Having amassed 37 caps for England there’s no doubting the talent possessed by Alli, but his record of just three English Premier League appearances so far this season underscores the fact that Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is far from his biggest fan.

A move could then be on the cards for the 24-year-old, but few would have suspected the Scottish Premiership of being a likely destination.

Murphy took talkSPORT listeners aback on Tuesday when he said: “I’m not sure Dele would be up for it, but I thought maybe Stevie G at Rangers could persuade him to go there and win him the title.

“He’d play every week, score a lot of goals, get his confidence up and impress Gareth Southgate.

“There is an argument to say ‘would that be enough scoring at that level?’ because it is a drop down. But I don’t know.

“Maybe playing under Stevie is something that he would enjoy.”

Rangers fans took that suggestion with a pinch of salt, with many feeling he wouldn’t benefit their table-topping side.

Steven Gerrard’s side return to action tonight when they face St Mirren in the Betfred Cup quarter-final at the Simple Digital Arena.
