Some Rangers fans turn on Alex Rae after ex-Ger slams academy at Ibrox

The former Rangers midfielder’s comments come after Steven Gerrard’s side were knocked out of the cup by a former Ibrox youngster.

Some Rangers fans are turning on Alex Rae, after the former Gers midfielder criticised the Ibrox side’s academy.

Rae’s comments were made after Lewis Ferguson, a player Rangers released from their youth system, scored the goal that knocked them out of the Scottish League Cup on Sunday.

As well as the Aberdeen midfielder, Harry Cochrane (Hearts) and Lewis Morgan (Celtic) are among the high profile ex-Rangers kids now playing for Scottish Premiership rivals.

And speaking to Clyde 1 Superscoreboard earlier this week Rae said: “That’s a bugbear of mine, how guys like Ferguson and that are getting let go from Rangers. They’re now scoring in cup finals.

“You look at Rangers, are they really bringing players of any substance through the youth system? I’m not quite sure.

“It’s been bothering me for the last few years. Ferguson, Harry Cochrane, Lewis Morgan from Celtic the day before playing in a semi-final. They’re not contributing to Rangers, I know that.”

Nevertheless, with Stephen Kelly having featured for Rangers’ first team this season and seven Gers youngsters called into Scotland’s Under-19 squad earlier this week, it could be argued the club’s academy is doing just fine considering the state it was in until very recently.

Speaking to the Glasgow Evening Times two years ago, the Rangers academy head, Craig Mulholland, warned it could take until 2020 to see Auchenhowie products prevalent within the senior squad at Ibrox.
