There are some Barcelona players who do not want their club to sign Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum this summer, according to a report from Spain.
The Liverpool midfielder has been linked with a move to Barcelona fairly regularly over the past nine months or so.
And considering he looks set to leave the Reds on a Bosman, the speculation about a move to Camp Nou will only intensify over the coming weeks and months.
Ronald Koeman has managed the 30-year-old with the Netherlands’ national team and the Dutch coach is said to be keen on a reunion.
But Mundo Deportivo have reported that there are some players inside Barcelona’s dressing room who don’t want Wijnaldum – who cost Liverpool £25 million in 2016 – or Memphis Depay, another Dutchman linked with the Catalan giants.
The report suggests that certain players view the pair as too ‘eccentric’ and ‘special’.
If true, the Barca stars in question probably don’t know much about Wijnaldum as a footballer.
Yes, he is refusing to sign Liverpool’s latest contract offer, but the former Newcastle United midfielder is hardly what you would describe as ‘eccentric’ or ‘special’ in a negative context.
In fact, it was reported by Fabrizio Romano in January that Wijnaldum wouldn’t sign a pre-contract agreement with anybody else in that month, despite being allowed to, because he wanted to respect Liverpool.
There’s a lot of honour and decency in Wijnaldum and Barca – who were knocked out of the Champions League by a brace from this very player in 2019 – would be lucky to have him, especially for free.
