Newcastle United’s season opened with a 2-1 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon – and as if that wasn’t bad enough, Rafael Benitez has been dealt an early injury blow.

The Magpies slipped to defeat against Spurs thanks to Dele Alli’s winning goal, after Newcastle hitman Joselu equalised to cancel out Jan Vertonghen’s opener at St. James’ Park.

Kicking off with a defeat isn’t exactly how Benitez will have wanted Saturday to go, and an additional blow came as DeAndre Yedlin was substituted with a knee injury in added time.

Yedlin’s injury leaves Newcastle with a vacancy at right back, and whilst Javier Manquillo may be primed for the role, Benitez does have another option at his disposal.

Jamie Sterry has been coming up through the Newcastle ranks, but has made just four senior appearances for his hometown club having struggled to break through at St. James’ Park.

After loan spells with Coventry City and Crewe Alexandra, Sterry may now feel that he is ready to push for playing time in light of Yedlin’s injury, especially given Manquillo’s poor displays last season.

Newcastle fans have now taken to Twitter to call for Sterry to play against Cardiff City this weekend, with many desperate to see the Newcastle-born defender make a first Premier League start.

Yet, if Sterry doesn’t receive consideration from Benitez, the writing may be on the wall for the right back. Sterry turns 23 in November, and time is already running out for the defender to make an impact with the Magpies, and remaining on the sidelines even with a right back out would surely spell the end of his Newcastle hopes.
