Newcastle United were reportedly offered the chance to sign Max Meyer this summer before he joined the Magpies’ Premier League rivals.

It has been reported by the Chronicle this week that Newcastle were contacted by Max Meyer’s agent before the German completed his move to Crystal Palace about whether the Magpies would be interested in signing the playmaker.

Meyer was a free agent following the end of last season, but the Chronicle reports that a deal for the 22-year-old would have cost Newcastle around £170,000 a week and they passed on the opportunity to bring Meyer in.

The youngster may well end up lining up against Rafa Benitez’s side this season however, with the Eagles swooping in and taking him to Selhurst Park on a free transfer. Unsurprisingly, plenty of Newcastle fans have been discussing the reports on social media.

It has been another hugely frustrating window for the Toon Army and Benitez himself. There have been signings, but the purse strings have perhaps never been tighter and there are real concerns that Benitez is going to be left with a squad that is simply not good enough to compete with some of their Premier League rivals.

However, many of the fans are actually in agreement with the club’s reported decision on Meyer. The financial implications of a deal are eye-watering, especially when you consider that he has scored one league goal in the last two seasons.

He is clearly a talented player – he has made nearly 200 career appearances before his 23rd birthday – but it appears that the Newcastle supporters are not currently disappointed that the club did not make an effort to get something done.
