Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Kieran Gibbs from relegated West Bromwich Albion this summer as Rafa Benitez looks to sign a new left-back – but some Toon fans have reacted sarcastically to the interest.

The Daily Mail claimed on their live transfer blog (Thursday, 16:51) that the 28-year-old is liked by Benitez and Newcastle, but it seems unlikely that a move for the 10-time England international will materialise due to a lack of funds.

The report states that the former Arsenal defender’s price tag is likely to prove too much for Newcastle, with Benitez continually frustrated by owner Mike Ashley despite bringing five new players to St. James’ Park.

Newcastle have completed the signings of Martin Dubravka on a permanent basis, Kenedy on loan, Ki Sung-yueng on a free, Fabian Schar from Deportivo La Coruna and most recently Yoshinori Muto for around £9.5million.
