Newcastle United are the latest Premier League club to be linked with a move for AS Roma striker Gregoire Defrel after a disappointing first campaign with the Italian giants – but some Toon fans are disappointed with the potential signing.

Sky Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claims Newcastle want the 27-year-old, just a year after Roma lured the Frenchman to the Stadio Olimpico on loan with an obligation to buy. The deal cost Roma £17.8million in total (Roma’s official website).

However, they are not the only Premier League side interested in the Roma striker, who scored just one goal in 20 appearances for the Italians last season.

Corriere Dello Sport claimed earlier this week that Everton, West Ham United and Crystal Palace were also interested in the former Sassuolo and Parma striker.

Defrel struggled to break into Roma’s first team with the Italian giants boasting forwards such as Edin Dzeko and Patrick Schick being considered first and second choice. Of his 20 outings, 13 were from the bench.

He failed to complete 90 minutes once, as he was substituted in all of his seven starts. A move away from Roma looks like a possibility then, but Newcastle fans are unimpressed by the potential signing of Defrel this summer.
