The goalkeeper has committed his long-term future to life at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka has signed a new mammoth contract, the club announced on Thursday.

He’s signed a six-year deal at the club that ostensibly keeps him at the club until the summer of 2025.

The 30-year-old has been seen as a key player since arriving in 2018. Last season he helped keep 11 clean sheets and conceded just 48 times, a far better record than teams around Newcastle in the Premier League table.

This season he’s been in similarly good form.

Despite the Magpies losing against Chelsea at the weekend, the Slovakian international was a real stand-out, making six saves throughout the 90 minutes to keep the away side competitive in the match.

If Newcastle manage to resist transfer temptation then they’ll have a reliable goalkeeper for years to come.

It’s hard to find an elite shot-stopper and he makes the defensive line far more relaxed.

No surprise then that some fans were delighted to hear Thursday’s news.

These supporters took to Twitter to share their thoughts…

Others though feel that the contract is just a ploy by the club to ensure they get a bigger transfer fee down the line, not trusting the decision makers at St James’ Park to keep the goalkeeper long-term.
