Ashley has come under huge stick from Newcastle fans for his lack of backing this summer.

Dennis Wise has defended under-fire Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley despite the Sports Direct owner’s lack of activity and backing in the transfer market this summer – and some Newcastle fans have blasted Wise for his view.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Wise said that he does not understand the criticism in which Ashley is subjected to – a decade after working with Ashley as an executive director at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle made a profit this summer, selling the likes of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Mikel Merino, Chancel Mbemba and Matz Sels, bringing in Yoshinori Muto, Kenedy, Salomon Rondon, Martin Dubravka, Ki Sung-yueng, Federico Fernandez and Fabian Schar.

Wise said: “Whatever he does, he will constantly take stick no matter what he does, simple as that. People complain about them not spending enough money, but if you trade well at a football club, and you’re able to bring players in, take players out and make money, I don’t see what the problem is with that.”

Though Newcastle have seemingly strengthened their side, fans are frustrated that the club have failed to match the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham and West Ham United who have all spent big this summer.

Some Newcastle fans have reacted on Twitter to Wise’s comments, blasting the former Chelsea and England midfielder for defending owner Ashley.
