Liverpool endured a frankly embarrassing night at Villa Park on Sunday, as they lost 7-2 against Dean Smith’s Aston Villa side.

Jurgen Klopp’s men turned in a dismal display as Jack Grealish, Ollie Watkins and Ross Barkley ran riot in a bizarre night in Birmingham.

In truth, the first goal set the tone for the night. Adrian gave possession away inside his own box, with Grealish finding Watkins to make it 1-0.

Adrian was given the nod in goal with Alisson out of action through injury, but the Spaniard showed that he has nowhere near the same level of quality with the ball at his feet as the Brazilian does.

The former West Ham United man turned in a shaky display throughout, and with Alisson seemingly out for at least a month, fans are understandably concerned about Adrian staying in goal for that long.

It’s now deadline day, and whilst it seems that Liverpool’s summer transfer business is done, fans are keen to see a new goalkeeper arrive before the window slams shut.

One name fans are particularly keen on is Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, who could be available today – at least according to the London Evening Standard last month, as they suggested that Spurs are open to offers.

Tottenham have brought in Joe Hart in this window to play as backup to Hugo Lloris, meaning that Gazzaniga – who spent time as Tottenham’s first-choice stopper last season – is now third-choice under Jose Mourinho.

The 28-year-old is more adept with the ball at his feet than Adrian, showing that under Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham, which could be appealing to Liverpool if they do pursue a new goalkeeper.

Gazzaniga only has 43 Premier League appearances to his name, but he also has one cap for Argentina, and has proven that he is a more than capable backup having excelled against Liverpool last season.

Liverpool may have beaten Spurs 2-1 at Anfield in October 2019, but Gazzaniga enjoyed an unbelievable afternoon, racking up 12 saves in a stunning display that may have lived long in the minds of Liverpool fans.

After the thrashing at the hands of Villa, Liverpool fans have been taking to Twitter to call for Gazzaniga to be signed, believing that he would be a better deputy for Alisson than Adrian is right now.

Some fans are begging the Reds to sign Gazzaniga, believing that he is ideal to be Alisson’s main cover and can fill in perfectly for the Brazilian for the coming weeks.

Others are worried that Liverpool will miss out if they wait any longer, begging the club to do everything they can to sign the Argentinian rather than pursue with Adrian any longer.

It’s unclear whether Liverpool are actually interested in Gazzaniga or not, but fans seem convinced that he is the man to sign despite his lowly squad role at Tottenham – and if Liverpool do look at any other goalkeepers today, maybe going for Gazzaniga would make sense for all parties.
