Some Liverpool fans think Edwards’s just missed out on brilliant £38m deal

Well, Liverpool will definitely be signing a centre-back this summer, but it won’t be Dayot Upamecano.

The Reds are in dire need of freshening up their defence in a season that’s been decimated by the loss of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

Liverpool, who are 13 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City, have also lost Joel Matip in recent weeks, while Fabinho, the glue that has kept an unstable back four together since March, is absent now too.

Upamecano has been linked with a move to Anfield as of late, with The Guardian reporting on Friday that the Merseysiders – and Chelsea – were keen on triggering his £38 million buyout clause.

But Bayern Munich announced this morning that they had signed the French centre-back.

That figure – £38 million – really isn’t a lot of money when you’re a 22-year-old defender as highly rated as Upamecano is.
