Some Liverpool fans on Twitter aren’t all that pleased with Nathaniel Clyne.

Liverpool thumped Napoli 5-0 in Dublin on Saturday night for what was their penultimate pre-season friendly before the nitty and gritty of Premier League life begins once again next weekend.

Clyne, who spent the vast majority of the 2017-18 campaign out with a back injury, started in the Irish capital yesterday but was replaced by Trent Alexander-Arnold just after the hour mark.

Joe Gomez impressed as Alexander-Arnold’s understudy in the Reds’ right-back position last term and the former Southampton defender had a big chance to make a statement to Jurgen Klopp last night.

However, some Liverpool fans on Twitter reckon that he blew it with what so many deem to have been a disappointing display from Clyne, who earns £70,000 per week on Merseyside [Total Sportek].

Here’s how they reacted to his display:

Gomez can also play as a centre-back and that might just save Clyne this season.

In all likelyhood he won’t be displacing Alexander-Arnold anytime soon after the youngster’s excellent 2017-18 campaign, but he’d have found playing time much harder to come by if Gomez was the second-in-command.
