Liverpool fans have reacted on Twitter to Dejan Lovren’s long-range rocket for Zenit Saint Petersburg in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The 31-year-old struck the ball from more than 30 yards out before it hit the back of the net during his side’s 2-1 defeat to Club Brugge.

But, unfortunately for the 2020 Premier League winner, his effort went down as an own goal because it hit the back of Brugge goalkeeper Ethan Horvath – he was deputising for another Liverpool man, Simon Mignolet, who is currently self-isolating.

Even though the effort went down as an own goal, it didn’t stop the Liverpool faithful from praising their former player for his effort because it deserved to go down as his goal.

Some questioned why he didn’t show such qualities during his time on Merseyside, as they pointed out that his long-range efforts used to sail over the crossbar rather than into the back of the net.

Nonetheless, given the recent long-term injury to Virgil van Dijk, a selection of fans even stated that they would take the Croatian back.

Although, some of the comments did seem to be tongue-in-cheek.

With no fans able to attend due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, Liverpool said the idea for the trophy lift was to honour the club's fans, but Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp urged fans to respect social distancing measures, after thousands gathered around the club's stadium and in the city centre following their coronation as champions last month. Either way, Liverpool could do with a player of his quality in the squad now that Van Dijk is out for the foreseeable because they didn’t replace him in their squad when they parted ways with him this summer.

Luckily for Liverpool, they still have the quality at the back in Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, it’s just a case of they are now missing that jewel in their crown.

But one thing is for sure, Jurgen Klopp cannot afford any more injury problems at the back because it will really hurt an already wounded animal.

Nonetheless, here is a selection of Liverpool fans reacting to Lovren’s bit of brilliance:
