The Liverpool boss is unhappy with the uncertainty around the club’s upcoming fixtures.
The Reds progressed into the quarter-finals of the competition last night after a fantastically entertaining match against Arsenal.
Now due to play Aston Villa in the next round, there’s apparently a possibility the club will not be able to fulfil their duties in the competition.
The Villa match is due to be played the week commencing 16 December but Liverpool play in the last four of the Club World Cup in Qatar on 18 December.
With the English Football League locked in talks with Liverpool about a potential switch in date, Klopp didn’t hold back with his comments to reporters in the wake of last night’s win.
As quoted by BBC Sport, the Reds boss said: “You have to think about these things. If you have a fixture list where one team cannot be part of all the games, then you have to think about it. Hopefully it starts at one point, hopefully it starts now.
“We will not be the victim of this problem. We played [on Wednesday] and we wanted to win. If they don’t find a proper date for us then we cannot play the next round and whoever is our opponent will go through – or Arsenal will play it. I cannot change that.”
How it all pans out will be fascinating to see, but it’s clear Klopp is looking to prioritise the Club World Cup over the League Cup.
It’s a stance that could prove controversial not just with some Liverpool supporters, but with fans of other teams in the competition and around the rest of the country.
