Some Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to give their reaction to comments from manager Jurgen Klopp about signing a central defender in the January transfer window.

With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez long-term injury absentees, many would suggest that Liverpool could do with signing an experienced centre-back this summer.

Klopp told The Guardian: “If the world was in a completely normal place and we have this situation, you could be sure we would try everything to do the right thing now. But the world is not in a normal place so I don’t know why we constantly treat a football club like it’s independent from all the other struggles around. It is not a time for massive investment if you don’t have the funds for it.”

Some Liverpool fans have given their take on Twitter on Klopp’s comments, and below are some of the best comments:

Joep Matip and Fabinho are the two main centre-backs for Liverpool at the moment, while Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips have been given chances and have done well.

A top-quality centre-back would be ideal for the Reds, but the problem is that when Van Dijk and Gomez are back from their respective injuries, then Klopp will have too many players for the same position.

Liverpool are doing quite well in the Premier League at the moment, and putting faith in young players such as Willians and Phillips now could pay dividends in the long run.

Klopp has also commented on the sub-par form of Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The German told The Times: “We play football in public and people are used to the level Trent showed over the last three or four years, since he started playing with us pretty much, The game he played [at Southampton] was obviously not his best. He knows that, we know that, it’s clear.

“There are explanations for this season if you want, but he had good games as well. He helped us a lot, absolutely. But the reason is, he started late, was out for a while with early Covid and had an injury as well, so he had no pre-season.”
