Liverpool fans on Twitter saw the funny side as Virgil van Dijk was used as a striker for a small period during Holland’s goalless draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Frank de Boer, who replaced new Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman in the dugout, opted to put Van Dijk upfront when Nathan Ake came onto the pitch.

It drew the attention from a selection of Liverpool supporters, who weren’t surprised by the decision because De Boer is in charge of Holland.

Whilst Do Boer was a fantastic and technically-gifted footballer, his reputation as a coach hasn’t really got going and a lot of it is down to his time at Crystal Palace.

The former defender only lasted four Premier League games at Selhurst Park. He lost all his games in charge, but he now finds himself leading his own national side.

He has been in charge for two games – losing one and the goalless draw against Bosnia on Sunday.

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

Van Dijk only played 45 minutes during Holland’s defeat to Mexico in an international friendly last time out. And this time around they were unable to get past Bosnia.

It will be interesting to see if Do Boer throws a couple more surprises and uses Van Dijk in any other role.

But it seems his decision to play Liverpool’s defensive rock as a number nine hasn’t gone down well with his fans back at Anfield:
