Wayne Rooney made quite a big claim regarding Liverpool on Thursday.
The Reds are heavily linked with a move for Thiago Alcantara and Fabrizio Romano revealed yesterday that the Premier League champions and Bayern Munich were due to restart transfer talks.
According to The Guardian, Liverpool are refusing to stump up the £27 million needed to prise him from the Allianz Arena.
Rooney has told talkSPORT that next season’s title race is already ‘done’ if Jurgen Klopp successfully gets the former Barcelona midfielder, adding that it would ‘be a better signing than Messi’ potentially going to Manchester City.
By virtue of the fact that Messi is arguably the greatest player to lace up a pair of football boots, it’s a massive claim by the Manchester United legend and one that even some Liverpool fans have questioned.
Here’s how some fans of the Anfield club reacted on Twitter:
Rooney is talking nonsense here, if we’re honest. Messi would improve Manchester City far more than Thiago will improve Liverpool.
Gini Wijnaldum might not be as fashionable as Thiago, but he did a stellar job for Klopp’s side last term, starting 35 of their 38 Premier League games.
The Spaniard, who’s just won the Champions League, is a better player than Wijnaldum, but whether he could slip into Klopp’s best XI as effectively as the Dutchman, without disrupting the balance, is another thing.
