Will the Anfield icon commit himself to Liverpool with a new deal?

Conflicting reports emerged over the weekend about the future of Liverpool defender of Virgil van Dijk.

The Mirror claimed in an exclusive report that the Anfield defender was on the verge of committing himself to a new six-year deal at the club that would see him earn as much as £200k-a-week.

However, that was quickly followed up by a subsequent report from The Liverpool Echo suggesting that no talks were even planned between player and club.

Further to that, The Echo claiim that van Dijk was ‘bemused’ by the speculation.

It’s a rather confusing picture but there is absolutely no reason for Reds supporters to worry about the player.

The Dutch international is signed up until the summer of 2023, so there’s zero rush in terms of negotiations that would see him extend that stay on Merseyside.

Keeping him is crucial of course considering the transformation Liverpool have undergone since he signed in January 2018.

The Anfield stand-out is absolutely crucial to Jurgen Klopp’s side and there would be little surprise if the player did end up being awarded with a bumper new contract.

That’s something that is obviously appealing to Liverpool fans.

The Mirror story had some excited and even in the wake of The Echo’s later report, many were still eager for the club to get the business done.

These supporters have taken to Twitter over the last 48 hours to share their thoughts on it all…
