Liverpool fans on Twitter have hit back at Gary Neville after he questioned the Premier League’s decision to replace David Coote as the VAR for the Reds’ game against Leicester this weekend.
Neville branded the decision as strange and questioned why it was happening, and this rubbed Liverpool fans up the wrong way.
This decision came as a relief to many Reds supporters who were angry that he was appointed in the first place.
Coote was of course on VAR duty for the controversial Merseyside derby last month that saw Liverpool hampered by two key decisions.
Firstly, Coote failed to penalise Jordan Pickford for his reckless challenge on Virgil van Dijk that saw the Dutchman pick up a serious injury.
Then towards the end of the game, Coote disallowed a Liverpool winner due to a very questionable offside call against Sadio Mane.
Liverpool contacted the Premier League to question the failure to punish Pickford’s challenge on van Dijk, so it’s clear that the club have questions about Coote’s ability to officiate.
Fans weren’t happy that Neville had decided to openly question this decision, and they made their voices heard on social media.
A number of supporters pointed out Neville’s hypocrisy, stating that Alex Ferguson had a huge influence on officials during his time as Manchester United manager, something that Fergie has admitted to since his retirement.
Others stated that this decision was actually a benefit to Leicester, while others pointed towards the Everton game as justification for this call.
Whatever the reason for Coote being replaced is, supporters certainly weren’t happy with Gary Neville’s response to the situation.
