Some Liverpool fans have quite rightly questioned the logistics of potentially signing Kylian Mbappe.
According to The Times, the Paris Saint-Germain superstar has informed the Ligue 1 champions that he wishes to leave the French capital for either the Premier League or La Liga next summer.
Should he prefer a switch to England, Anfield might make the most sense by virtue of the fact that Mbappe praised Jurgen Klopp earlier in the summer, describing the Reds – who have won a Premier League, Champions League and Club World Cup under the German – as a ‘winning machine’.
Liverpool were mentioned in The Times‘ report but some fans of the Merseyside club aren’t buying that a move could be possible.
That’s because this summer has been dominated by a transfer saga involving Thiago Alcantara.
Klopp’s side, who previously failed to sign Timo Werner for £47.5 million, have so far refused to stump up the £27 million needed to take the Bayern Munich midfielder to England [Bild].
And if Liverpool have difficulties spending that on Thiago, the supporters are questioning how they’re going to manage to spend a guaranteed nine figures on the 21-year-old France international.
Here’s how they’re reacting on Twitter to the report:
Indeed, Liverpool fans are absolutely correct in their observations, even if it’s the same observation.
Despite being one of the biggest clubs in Europe, they’re just not big spenders anymore and haven’t been in over two years.
The last time Liverpool splashed the cash on a single player, it was Alisson’s £65 million arrival in July of 2018.
Left-back Kostas Tsimikas is the biggest player to join the club since then in terms of expenditure, following his £11 million move from Olympiacos earlier this summer, which makes a mockery of the idea that they’ll be spending upwards of £200 million on the Frenchman.
