It’s a new season for Leeds United but the same problems for midfielder Adam Forshaw.

The Whites kick off their Premier League campaign with a trip to champions Liverpool on Saturday evening.

It’ll be a momentous occasion for everybody associated with Leeds, by virtue of the fact it’ll be their first top-flight match since 2004.

But Forshaw can feel justified in being devastated not to be involved.

The former Middlesbrough star, who grew up on Merseyside, has been ruled out of the clash with the same injury that decimated his 2019-20 campaign.

Marcelo Bielsa said: “No, Adam Forshaw is out. He’s a separate case.”

In fact, Forshaw, a £4.5 million signing in 2018, hasn’t kicked a ball for Leeds since September of last year, making it almost a full year since he’s had a game.

And some fans of the Elland Road club believe that his prolonged absence casts doubt on whether he’ll ever appear for them again:

Physically Forshaw is obviously hurting, but mentally he must be too.

At 28, the player is – or should be – in the prime of his footballing career, but it remains to be seen when he’s going to be back in action.

When fit, he’s a big asset for Bielsa but with Leeds being back in the big time, and the transfer window still open, perhaps Victor Orta should sign a midfielder to protect Bielsa in the event that this issue carries on a while longer.
