Leeds United got the new Championship season off to a flyer as they beat Stoke City at Elland Road.

A number of Leeds fans took to Twitter to laud Kemar Roofe’s performance during the Whites’ hugely impressive win over Stoke City in their opening game of the new Championship season.

Heading into the game, it seemed impossible to predict how Leeds’ clash with the Potters would play out on Sunday. Marcelo Bielsa’s appointment had captured the imagination, but the Whites’ pre-season was mixed and many are expecting Stoke to win the second tier title this term.

However, Leeds were superb. Mateusz Klich scored inside 15 minutes before Pablo Hernandez doubled the home side’s lead just before the break. Benik Afobe would get one back from the spot shortly after the break, but Liam Cooper restored Leeds’ two goal lead before the hour-mark.

He may not have got onto the scoresheet in the 3-1 win, but there is no question that Roofe was one of the stars of the show at Elland Road as he led the line while new signing Patrick Bamford remained on the bench.

Roofe has come in for plenty of criticism since his £3 million move – fee reported by BBC Sport – but Bielsa showed plenty of faith in him by handing him the chance to start against Stoke. And the former Oxford United ace repaid that faith emphatically.

The 25-year-old was exciting when he had the ball and relentless when the Stoke defence were in possession. His display made such a difference, and it certainly did not go unnoticed by the supporters.

The fans were hugely impressed by Roofe’s effort and suggested that Bamford has a fight on his hands if he hopes to get into the side anytime soon. One supporter even suggested that Roofe looked like a Premier League player with his performance in the fantastic win.
