Leeds United fans on Twitter have come to the aide of Kalvin Phillips and defended his performance for England last night after they feel he was getting unfair criticism.
The Three Lions suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Denmark in the UEFA Nations League, with Phillips starting in a two-man midfield with West Ham United’s Declan Rice.
Even though England were down to 10 men in the first half, when Harry Maguire was sent off, it was overall a pretty lacklustre and slow display from the home side.
But Leeds fans on Twitter felt the need to defend their star man, who they felt was one of a few positives.
Others felt the system in which Gareth Southgate is using isn’t helping the 24-year-old’s cause, nor the other players in the team.
A lot has been made of how Southgate has set up during these last two internationals, with many feeling that he is being too defensive.
Phillips works best playing as a single pivot where he can control the defensive third of the pitch, open himself up and play long passes which has seen him earn that special nickname the ‘Yorkshire Pirlo’.
But it seems that he is being handcuffed slightly, and as a result, he isn’t able to express himself like Leeds fans want him to.
Despite that, those at Elland Road feel that he has looked comfortable on the international stage despite only playing a handful of games in England’s top-flight.
