Leeds United had a brilliant transfer window, it’s fair to say.
The Premier League new boys smashed their transfer record in signing Rodrigo for a £30 million swoop, while the likes of Diego Llorente, Robin Koch and Raphinha also arrived at Elland Road in eight-figure deals which totaled close to £50 million.
One man who Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa couldn’t get, however, is Rodrigo De Paul.
The Argentina international was heavily linked with a move to West Yorkshire but The Mirror reported in the final week of the window that United were refusing to meet his £35 million release clause.
Even without De Paul, Leeds could and probably will still enjoy a brilliant first season back in the top flight following a 16-year absence, with Bielsa’s side winning seven points out of a possible 12 so far – their only defeat being a 4-3 reverse away to champions Liverpool.
But did they still miss out on a coup in the form of the Udinese midfielder? Perhaps, because neutral fans on Twitter are absolutely raving about his latest performance.
Argentina beat Ecuador in World Cup qualifying in the early hours of this morning – and here’s what some non-Leeds supporters are saying about his display:
Will Bielsa go back in January? Potentially, but the 26-year-old, who is contracted to the Italian side until 2024, might not be one of the continent’s best kept secrets any longer.
The more he impresses on the international stage alongside the likes of Lionel Messi, the higher his profile will raise and the truth is that Leeds may not be the only horse in the race come this winter.
