It looks like Celtic have identified a replacement for Jozo Simunovic.
The Hoops released the big centre-back earlier this summer, leaving Neil Lennon with only Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer as quality options.
And The Record have reported that Celtic are interested in signing Philadelphia Union stalwart Mark McKenzie.
Interestingly, that speculation might’ve actually stemmed from the United States.
During commentary on ESPN, Taylor Twellman revealed that the Hoops were ‘all over’ the 21-year-old powerhouse.
Here’s how US-based fans reacted to the idea of Celtic signing the young defender:
If we’re honest, Lennon can’t sign McKenzie as Simunovic’s replacement.
Yes, the Northern Irishman can bring him to Parkhead, but Simunovic was a big player for Lennon and a big player will need to come in.
Is McKenzie a big player? Well, no. He might be one day, but with Celtic going for 10-in-a-row, there’s absolutely no need to take gambles.
The Bhoys need a quality, experienced and tested defender – and the truth is McKenzie doesn’t tick any of those boxes for now.
