Everton’s miserable pre-season form continued as they were thrashed by the Ligue 1 side.

A number of Everton fans have taken to Twitter to react to Phil Jagielka’s display during the Toffees’ latest pre-season game, which ended in a 4-1 defeat against Rennes on Saturday.

It has been a tough start to life at Goodison Park for Marco Silva, with their only victory coming against a side from Austria’s fifth tier, while they could only draw with Bury and have been beaten by Lille, Porto and Blackburn Rovers.

There was a positive to emerge from this weekend’s game, with new signing Richarlison marking his first start for the Toffees by scoring just before half-time. It was however, set to be a hugely disappointing day for the Merseyside outfit.

Everton lost 4-1 to the team that finished fifth in France’s top flight last term, and major questions were asked of the centre-back pairing of Jagielka and Michael Keane.

The Toffees’ defensive problems plagued the side last season and it appears that Silva is struggling to address those concerns ahead of the new Premier League campaign. Unsurprisingly, many of the fans were not happy, particularly with Jagielka’s display.

There is no question how much respect the large majority of Everton supporters have for the 35-year-old, who may well pass 400 appearances for the club in all competitions during the coming campaign. But many feel that he should not be in the strongest side as he approaches the twilight of his career.

Some, in the wake of yesterday’s game, have suggested that he should be sold, and many are clearly urging the club to make some signings in that area of the pitch before the window shuts.
