Stekelenburg was Everton’s third-choice goalkeeper last season.

Maarten Stekelenburg has signed a new contract at Everton to remain at Goodison Park until the summer of 2020 – but Everton fans are not happy with the decision to extend his stay on Merseyside.
Everton announced on their official website that 35-year-old goalkeeper Stekelenburg had signed a two-year contract at the club, which will stretch the Dutch goalkeeper’s stay at Everton to four years.
He was third choice goalkeeper to Joel Robles and Jordan Pickford last season, but he is likely to make the step up to back-up goalkeeper this season after Spaniard Robles left to join Real Betis.
Since joining the club from Fulham in the summer of 2016, the former AS Roma and Ajax stopper has clocked up 24 appearances for Everton in which he has conceded 29 goals but kept seven clean sheets.
His game time is likely to dramatically reduce this season, though, with Everton failing to qualify for the Europa League. It leaves the 58-time Holland international with just scraps to feed off, likely to be in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
Some Everton fans were not happy to see that Stekelenburg had been given a new deal to remain with the club, though, with one fan posting: “Nice to see Everton awarding a failure again”.
