A number of Doncaster Rovers fans and Leeds teammates have taken to Twitter to laud Mallik Wilks after the youngster scored a superb goal on his debut for the League One side in their opening day win over Southend at the weekend.

Wilks swapped Elland Road for a loan spell at the Keepmoat Stadium this summer and will be hoping that he can show the kind of form that forces him onto the periphery of Marcelo Bielsa’s plans upon his return after a year that saw a number of strikers join him in the pecking order at Thorp Arch.

It is early days of course, but Wilks has got off to a flyer after helping Donny secure a 3-2 win at Roots Hall – a ground that his parent club visited in pre-season this summer – with the 19-year-old scoring a brilliant goal during the second-half.

Initially facing away from goal, Wilks displayed some nice of touches of skill to get the ball under control and then turn before drilling his shot into the bottom corner to give Doncaster a 2-0 lead shortly before the hour mark.

And following the game, the forward received the plaudits from Leeds teammates, Liam Kitching, Lewie Coyle and Jack Clarke, as well as a number of the Doncaster fans who are hoping that he will enjoy a productive spell while he is on loan from the Whites.

It is a moment of impressive skill that has certainly been overshadowed by Bielsa’s side kicking off their own campaign with a victory over Stoke on Sunday, but the goal from Wilks is undoubtedly a reminder that he could be one to keep an eye on during the coming season.
