Former Celtic defender Kieran Tierney made only his fifth Premier League start for Arsenal tonight.
The injury-hit Scot was named in Mikel Arteta’s first XI as the Gunners got their season back underway with a visit to Manchester City.
Tierney, a £25 million signing from Celtic last August, has had a 2019-20 campaign to forget and only clocked 833 minutes of football for Arsenal across all competitions prior to tonight.
Here’s how fans of his former club reacted to his display tonight:
Despite the North Londoners slumping to a 3-0 defeat on match-day one of Project Restart, Tierney was arguably one of his side’s better players on the night.
It was a dreadful defensive display by Arsenal, but that was more about other players – like David Luiz – than it was about the Celtic product.
The 22-year-old is predominantly a left-back, but a red card for Luiz early in the second half meant that Tierney had to go centrally and, to be fair, he didn’t look all that daunted.
It’s still far too early to say whether he’ll be a good addition by Arsenal, such is his injury history, but there were a lot of promising signs tonight.
