Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor has committed his long-term future to the Scottish champions by signing a new five-year contract, the club announced on their official website on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old’s previous contract was due to expire in 2023 but was happy to agree to a one-year extension.

He’s had increasing importance to the Hoops over the last few years and last season that was recognised when he won the club’s Player of the Year award.

As shown by Transfermarkt, no Celtic player has featured in Neil Lennon’s team for more minutes this season than the Scotland international.

McGregor was the subject of summer transfer interest from Leicester City, but the Hoops moved quickly to rule out the possibility of him leaving in August (Daily Record).

Although there was no urgent need for Celtic to be panicked by his contract situation, this latest deal further strengthens their position.

If any team comes calling in January or next summer then it’s fair to say they can dictate the terms of a potential departure, much like the Kieran Tierney situation earlier this year.

Given his influence on the way Lennon’s side plays, fans are understandably delighted he’s decided to sign a new deal.

Callum McGregor of Celtic arrives prior to the Betfred Cup Semi-Final match between Hibernan and Celtic at Hampden Park on November 02, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.
