Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told Football.London that Gabriel Martinelli has twisted his ankle.

Arteta has said that Martinelli was in tears and was in a lot of pain because of the injury that he suffered before the game against Newcastle United tonight.

The Spaniard has said that he is disappointed at the injury suffered by the 19-year-old forward.

Arteta made the comments following Arsenal’s win against Newcastle in the third round of the FA Cup tonight.

As reported by talkSPORT, Martinelli suffered the injury during warm-up at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta told Football.London about Martinelli: “I am gutted. I was in my office before the game and one of the medical staff came in and said he twisted his ankle. He was in tears and in a lot of pain.”

The Spaniard added: “We’re going to see how he is but he didn’t look good. He was in pain. He’s a character that he wants to play the next game, hopefully it’s not too serious.”

Some Arsenal fans have responded to Arteta’s comments on Martinelli, and below are some of the best comments on Twitter.

Disappointment for Gabriel Martinelli

Martinelli is a very talented and promising young forward who has a bright future ahead of him.

The injury to the Brazilian will come as a blow both for him and for Arsenal. The teenager had returned from a lengthy lay-off just weeks ago, and he will hope that the fresh injury is not serious.

Martinelli could be a very important player for Arsenal in the coming weeks and months if he stays fit.
