It’s pretty clear that Arsenal have gone backwards since Arsene Wenger left the club back in 2018.

In 22 years as the Gunners’ boss, Arsenal never finished lower than sixth in the Premier League table.

In two of the last three seasons, the North Londoners have finished eighth and with Mikel Arteta’s side presently sitting bottom of the table, after losing all three of their matches and conceding nine goals, it could be a tall order if they’re going to better that this time around.

Because of their rotten start, Arteta is firmly under pressure at the Emirates Stadium and losing there to Norwich City next weekend could force the club’s hierarchy into cutting their losses, hiring somebody else.

Wenger, who won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups during his time at the club, is very much an iconic figure at Arsenal, even if his popularity waned among many fans during his final few years in charge.

And interestingly, some fans believe that the legendary Frenchman might’ve hinted that he would consider a return.

When asked about a sensational comeback, Wenger told Bild Live on Friday: “Today the club is in good shape. They had two tough games, the team has potential and I hope they can come back. At the moment I’m just a fan.”

And it’s the ‘at the moment‘ part of the interview which has some Arsenal fans talking on Twitter: Here’s how they responded to his comments:

Is it possible?

In a word, no.

Wenger, who has a job with FIFA now, turns 72 in October and quite frankly, it’s absurd to believe he would want another crack at the Arsenal job.

It’s possible that he would get the team playing better than Arteta, who had no experience of senior management before the club hired him in December of 2019, but there’s no long-term value in it.

If Arsenal fire Arteta, the next man has to be an appointment who’d be there for years, because it’ll take years for the Gunners to get back into the Champions League, let alone actually challenge for and win the title again.
