Daniel Farke told Sky Sports Football (03/10/20 at 12:20 pm) that ‘some are struggling’ with speculation after he was asked about why he left Leeds-linked Todd Cantwell out of his matchday squad.

Norwich’s man on the touchline left Cantwell out of the 18 that lost to Derby on Saturday, with rumours about a move to Elland Road surfing the transfer waters.

The Press Association have recently claimed that Cantwell is a Leeds United target and a fee of £15 million has been muted.

When Farke was asked about why Cantwell was left out of his matchday squad, but other players linked with moves away, such as Emi Buendia, were selected, he issued this frosty response and seemingly aimed a jibe at Cantwell’s character.

“Not too much [contrast between them],” Farke told Sky Sports. “There’s a lot of competiton in our squad. It’s also for young players not that easy to deal with all the ongoing speculation and rumours.

“I made it clear. Sometimes you have to make some late decisions and also to make sure at the end of the week to make sure everyone is focused, full of desire and ready to go.

“I don’t blame any of my players. I know they are all human beings. It’s not easy. Some players can handle this speculation in the perfect way, it makes [Max] Aarons the perfect role model. Some are struggling a bit more, so I wouldn’t interpret too much into it. I predicted these first five games will be bumpy until the transfer window is closed.”

Biggest Premier League transfer deadline day deals in 2019

  1. Alex Iwobi

    Arsenal to Everton: £34 million

  2. Ismaila Sarr

    Rennes to Watford: £30 million

  3. Ryan Sessegnon

    Fulham to Tottenham: £25 million

  4. Kieran Tierney

    Celtic to Arsenal: £25 million

  5. Dennis Praet

    Sampdoria to Leicester: £18 million

It needs to be remembered that Cantwell started Norwich’s first few games, but since then he has been left out by his manager.

Whilst a lot of the focus will be on Monday’s 11 pm deadline for Premier League clubs to conclude the majority of their deals, they can still do business with those in the EFL by October 16.

That includes Cantwell, so it will be interesting to see how this story pans out and whether Leeds will put the money on the table for his services.
