Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Lautaro Martinez, and it seems that Wayne Rooney is a big fan of the Inter Milan striker, as quoted in The Times.

Former Manchester United star Rooney has described Martinez, linked with Tottenham, as a “good” and “solid” player.

Rooney made the comment about the Inter striker while discussing Argentine’s chances of winning the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar.

In October, Inter Live reported that Tottenham are planning a bid for Martinez and want to bring him to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to keep head coach Antonio Conte happy.

We covered the report here on HITC Sport at the time.

Wayne Rooney on Tottenham Hotspur target Lautaro Martinez

Rooney wrote: “For me, Argentina are the favourites. Unlike in 2018, they have plenty of good, solid players around Lionel Messi such as Lautaro Martínez, Leandro Paredes, Rodrigo De Paul and of course Ángel Di María.

“Winning the Copa America last year will have given them confidence and has taken a bit of pressure off them.

“The climate will suit them too. The only thing they are missing is a No 9, that focal point in attack, but I think they will be really dangerous.”

Great potential signing for Spurs

In our view, Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez would be a great signing for Tottenham Hotspur.

Martinez is only 25, so he could still grow and develop as a player.

The Argentine is used to play alongside another striker at Inter, so he could do the same with Harry Kane at Tottenham.

And he scores goals.

Martinez has scored seven goals and given three assists in 14 Serie A starts and has scored one goal and provided two assists in five UEFA Champions League starts.

The Argentina international striker scored 21 goals in 28 Serie A starts last season, and found the back of the net 17 times in 30 league starts in 2020-21.
