Tottenham Hotspur sold Juan Foyth to Villarreal on a permanent basis this past summer.
Former Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho loaned the Argentina international to the Spanish outfit during the summer of 2020.
And a permanent, long-term transfer was agreed for around £12.8 million in June.
Interestingly, though, it might’ve potentially been a poor decision by Spurs to let him go.
Last night, Villarreal beat Atalanta to move into the last 16 of the Champions League.
And with the North Londoners now a Europa Conference League outfit, well it’s safe to say that the 23-year-old South American has had the last laugh.
Deserved more chances
Honestly, Foyth was never given a fair crack of the whip during Mourinho’s reign at Tottenham.
During Mourinho’s first six months in North London, the versatile defender managed only 46 minutes of Premier League football.
The Portuguese coach completely abandoned him, before then loaning the player to Spain.
Conte needs him?
You could perhaps argue that Antonio Conte could’ve done with having Foyth around this season.
With Cristian Romero ruled out until next year, Davinson Sanchez being Davinson Sanchez, and Joe Rodon on the periphery of things, Foyth just may have come in handy.
Particularly because under Unai Emery, he has blossomed into quite a brilliant right-back.
Whether it was in that role or central defence, Conte wouldn’t have turned his nose up at having a versatile, promising player like the Argentine available to him.
However, there’s no doubt that the player himself is loving life away from the Lilywhites.
And his participation in the Champions League knockout phase will prove as much.
