Sold by Moyes in 2012, now tipped for England: should Everton move to re-sign Adam Forshaw?

Everton’s academy has notably produced the likes of Wayne Rooney and Ross Barkley, and with Tom Davies coming through at Goodison Park, manager Ronald Koeman will be hoping for more success from the academy.

One player that Koeman will wish had have been kept at the club though is Middlesbrough’s Adam Forshaw, who has impressed in the Premier League this season.

The Liverpool-born midfielder joined Everton at the age of just seven, and made his way up through the ranks at Goodison Park, making two first-team appearances before a loan move to Brentford in 2012.

Forshaw was then sold to Brentford by then-Everton manager David Moyes, where he racked up 100 appearances and helped the club win promotion to the Championship, before a brief spell with Wigan 2014.

Since joining Middlesbrough, Forshaw has been the heartbeat of their midfield and one of Aitor Karanka’s most trusted players before his sacking, as he made 34 appearances last term and 27 so far this term.

At 25, Forshaw is coming into his prime, and with Middlesbrough facing relegation back to the Championship, he could be a target for clubs this summer, with Everton one team who should be keeping an eye on him.

Question marks surround the futures of both Muhamed Besic and James McCarthy, whilst veteran midfielder Gareth Barry is now 36, meaning a new midfielder could be targeted anyway despite Davies’ progression.

Add in that The Sun claim that Arsenal want Idrissa Gueye, and the Daily Mail report that Ross Barkley is a target for Tottenham, and manager Koeman may be in need of at least one midfielder this summer depending on out goings.

If one of those players leave this summer, then Forshaw – allegedly on England’s radar according to The Telegraph – should be a top target, having proven himself as a Premier League-calibre box-to-box midfield, with his energy no doubt appealing to Koeman, whilst giving Forshaw the chance to attend to some unfinished business at Goodison Park.
