Sheffield United were reported this weekend to be considering letting Billy Sharp leave the club for the right offer (The Sun 21/1 p59).

Sharp was overlooked at the weekend for Manchester United loanee James Wilson, and he has not started any of the Blades’ three league games so far in 2018.

Just perhaps, former club Leeds United should consider bringing him back to continue his unfinished business at Elland Road.

Sharp spent the 2014/15 season at Leeds before being tempted to move on after failing to hold down a regular place.

Currently Leeds are in need of an extra striker, with loanee Pierre-Michel Lasogga inconsistent and Caleb Ekuban strugglign with injuries.

Sharp has scored eight goals in 20 Championship appearances this season, including in a win over Leeds.

A departure would be surprising, but so is his current predicament, starting just one league game of United’s past six.

Sharp scored 51 goals in two seasons in League One, firing the Blades to promotion.

He could be precisely what Leeds need, a striker highly familiar with English football, who already knows the club and would benefit from the stability which was non-existent at the club during his previous spell in the Massimo Cellino era.

Sheffield United would be right to be wary of selling to a Championship rival, but it is a deal Leeds should target considering the striker’s current predicament.
