Jose Mourinho claims that Tottenham Hotspur hitman Harry Kane did his bit in helping England beat Croatia today.
The Three Lions kicked off their Euro 2020 campaign with a narrow 1-0 win at Wembley.
It was Raheem Sterling who scored the winning goal on what was a pretty quiet afternoon for the Tottenham hitman.
Kane has just won the Premier League’s Golden Boot but he barely had a sniff at goal for his country today.
But Mourinho, who managed the 27-year-old for 18 months in North London, claims that his former player played a big role in Sterling’s goal by dragging Domagoj Vida away with his run, allowing the Manchester City star the opportunity to score.
Mourinho, speaking with Sol Campbell and others, told talkSPORT: “I think Harry Kane did half of the job too, without touching the ball. This kind of striker – and Sol knows how difficult it is to defend against these guys – they create problems for the defender. He [Vida] was chasing Harry so Harry without touching the ball half of the job.”
Kane needs to do more
Mourinho is right what he says about the Tottenham striker.
But really, Gareth Southgate will want – and need – him to be scoring goals if England are going to get far in the tournament and potentially go all the way.
Remember, this is one of the continent’s most lethal goalscorers and simply making a dummy run to distract the defenders every game isn’t going to cut it.
But Kane, being the goal-hungry player that he is, certainly won’t settle for making the sort of runs which create chances for others; he’s going to want to be the man putting them in the back of the net and few would back against him doing that.
