Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham remains in doubt.
Arsenal icon Sol Campbell has told the Daily Express that he does not expect Toby Alderweireld to walk out on Tottenham Hotspur, and has urged the club to keep the contract rebel.
The 29-year-old’s game time at Spurs has been marginalised this season by Mauricio Pochettino as the Belgium international’s demands of £150,000 a week remain too high for Spurs’ liking.
With only a year left on his current contract, Alderweireld could be set to leave this summer with chairman Daniel Levy unlikely to want to lose the former Atletico Madrid defender on a free transfer.
But Campbell, who left Spurs to join north London rivals Arsenal, told the Express that he does not believe Alderweireld will walk out on the club despite interest from Chelsea, Manchester United and Barcelona.
“If a team wants you bad enough they’ll make it happen and come to a compromise and either he’ll stay at Tottenham or he’ll move on,” Campbell said. “I don’t think Tottenham will allow him to drift on for 18 months, a deal will be struck either way.
“He’s a top player, the fans love him. I think they’ve got to try their best to keep him. He likes Tottenham but then something could kick in and the whole situation shifts because the forces have shifted and opinions have shifted and that happens in these big deals. The slightest thing can shift and put it off course.”
The north Londoners do have the option of activating a clause in his contract that will trigger another 12 months, but it would also see a £25million release clause inserted into his current deal.
Alderweireld has played just 11 times in the Premier League, last facing Brighton during Tuesday’s 1-1 draw. He was left out of the side to face Manchester United in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.
