Arsenal icon Sol Campbell has told Mikel Arteta the four things that the Gunners will ‘have to’ do to win the Premier League. They lead Manchester City by five points in the title race.

Campbell won two top-flight crowns after he joined Arsenal from their north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in 2001. The centre-half helped Arsene Wenger’s side lift the crown in his debut season. He was also then a crucial part of the Invincibles backline come 2003/04.

Arsenal further won three FA Cups with the 73-cap England legend, who also scored in the 2006 Champions League final. Campbell then captained Portsmouth to the FA Cup in 2008. While his Three Lions career took in three World Cups and three European Championships.

Campbell was amongst the best centre-halves in the world during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Now, he sees title-winning potential in his former team as Arsenal chase their first Premier League crown since the Gunners completed their unbeaten record 19 years ago.

Arsenal sit five points clear of defending Premier League champions Manchester City with 44 points from 17 games this season. Under Arteta, the Emirates Stadium outfit have also won a top-flight leading 14 matches, drawn just twice and only lost once so far this term.

The Gunners also rank second through the top-flight for goals scored (40) and conceded (14) so far this season. Only the Citizens (45) have scored more, while Newcastle United have allowed fewer (11). The Magpies have also played in one fixture more than Arsenal.

So, Campbell believes Arsenal can win the Premier League title ahead of Manchester City this season. But he has listed four topics that Arteta will have to achieve to claim a crown come May. He also notes how Arsenal stuck with Arteta to get to where the club is today.

“He’s doing very well but it’s the fourth season,” Campbell told TuttoMercatoWEB. “Let’s not forget that. Often after a year-and-a-half, we change if the results don’t come.

“Now, yes but… Manchester City are behind, they’re coming. They’ll have to stay calm, not get agitated, stay down to earth and invest well.”

Arsenal are working on Campbell’s fourth point in the January transfer window

Arsenal appointed Arteta in December 2019 after sacking Unai Emery, who was the heir to Wenger’s throne, following 18 months. The Gunners also considered sacking the Spaniard in August 2021, per The Telegraph, after their worst start to a league campaign in 67 years.

Now, Arsenal are backing Arteta to deliver them a first Premier League title since 2004 with owner Stan Kroenke’s support. But they have already failed to sign one target in Joao Felix, per the Daily Record. Per Cadena SER, Chelsea are signing the Atletico Madrid star on loan.

Yet talks with Shakhtar Donetsk over a deal for Mykhaylo Mudryk could yet yield a reward. Media Foot claims the Ukraine winger would sign a five-year contract worth €7m-a-season (£119k-a/w) to join. Foot Mercato also notes his move could cost around €100m (£88.5m).
