Defender became a hate figure after swapping Tottenham for Arsenal. He now wants Spurs fans to ‘move on’.
Former England centre-back Sol Campbell is either loved or loathed in North London dependent on if you are an Arsenal or Tottenham supporter.
Campbell left Spurs on a free to join Arsenal in the early 2000s and became a hate figure among fans of his former club.
The defender justified his move by winning trophies with the Gunners, but to this day he is despised among Spurs fans.
Campbell now though wants Tottenham fans to let it go, and not feel the same hatred when they hear his name.
Speaking to JOE, Campbell said: “I can understand years ago, but I’m 44 this year. I’ve moved on, it’s all about moving on. I’m sorry but you have to look at it this way, the world has moved on.
“There are rivalries around the world but you have to move on. Life moves on, I’ve moved on, it’s insignificant for me now. I can understand 15 years ago, but we’re talking about maybe 20 years ago now.”
Campbell is now hoping to move into career in management but this is yet to get off the ground.
His playing career was an impressive one, earning 73 caps for England over an 11-year international stretch.
He won the League Cup with Tottenham in 1999 but the majority of his honours came with Arsenal, where he won the FA Cup three times and the Premier League twice, starring as one of the Gunners’ 2004 ‘Invincibles’.
Campbell also later won the FA Cup with Portsmouth in 2008, a feat which stands up today as one the most remarkable results in the competition for years.
